" We’re all connected together. If one sells their water, it affects us all. --FRANK Mc Murray, Chaffee County Rancher
Security Water District purchased the beautiful, 200-acre CB Ranch in Coaldale in December 2013, paying $1.25 million for the ranch and $480,000 for the ranch’s Hayden Creek water rights. Since that time, the citizens of Coaldale have come together to educate themselves on the impact of the purchase, voice their concerns to Security, and ultimately formed the Coaldale Alliance to ensure they had a voice in the anticipated water court proceedings. Eventually, in September, 2016, Security filed its Application for Change of Water Rights in Division 2 Water Court – Case No. 2016CW3055 – and the Coaldale Alliance filed a statement of opposition. Water court is a lengthy and costly process and proceedings continue. The future of the CB Ranch remains unclear.

The Coaldale Alliance is a 509 a2 non-profit formed in September 2016 to give voice to the residents of Coaldale regarding the sale of the CB Ranch to Security Water District. Our purpose is to work and educate to preserve the rural, agricultural, historic and scenic values that make Coaldale so special. We welcome and encourage participation by all community members. It is our hope that the outcome of the CB Ranch case keeps the ranch in agricultural use for as long as possible, provides for appropriate revegetation that will ensure proper invasive weed and erosion control, and the land remains as open space for wildlife habitat and scenic beauty.
